Days Gone outsold Ghost of Tsushima, but Sony ‘made it feel like a disappointment’

At launch, Days Gone received mixed reviews.

Days Gone’s director claims Bend Studio’s open-world zombie game sold around 10 million copies, but you won’t see Sony praising it like it did when Ghost of Tsushima hit the 8 million milestone.

Jeff Ross worked at Bend Studios for 20 years before leaving in 2020, shortly after Days Gone launched. “At the time I left Sony, Days Gone had been out for a year and a half (and a month), and sold over 8 million copies,” the director wrote on Twitter. “It’s since gone on to sell more, and then a million+ on Steam. Local studio management always made us feel like it was a big disappointment.”

At launch, Days Gone received mixed reviews. Many cited its strange audio mixing and its myriad bugs as big problems. Others pointed at the story and the way it’s structured, with some missions asking you to drive across the map, trigger a memory cutscene, and drive back again.

Now that most of the bugs have been ironed out, Days Gone is a decent game, and it’s developed a bit of a cult classic status among its fans. It landed on Steam on May 18, 2021, and has very positive user reviews on Valve’s PC storefront.

Bend Studios is currently working on a new IP that builds upon Days Gone’s open-world systems.
