The Chicago Bears still have several issues to fix on offense if they’re going to compete for the NFC North next season. The offensive line and tight end remain priorities, but the most important is the quarterback position.
Following Mitchell Trubisky’s disappointing 2019 season, general manager Ryan Pace brought in reinforcements in former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.
While the offense’s failures weren’t on Trubisky alone, he was a big reason for their struggles. Now, at the very least, Trubisky’s job is at stake. The Bears didn’t bring in Foles to be an insurance policy. They brought him in to compete for the starting job.
NFL Network analyst David Carr believes that one Bears quarterback is poised for a huge season. And he believes that quarterback will be the newcomer Foles.
2020 production: 65 percent completion rate, 4,000 pass yards, 28 TDs, 5 INTs.
Bears fans have wondered for months now: Will Mitchell Trubisky be our starting quarterback in 2020? Well, I think you have your answer. Trubisky will likely take a backseat to Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles. Trubisky has struggled going through his reads and getting the ball to the open guy, while Foles excels at ripping through his progressions to find the right target. The veteran quarterback has done that for so long that I’m convinced he could stay in quarantine for six months, roll out of bed and run Matt Nagy’s offense well.
I realize Foles is coming off an injury-abbreviated nightmare year with the Jaguars, but that’s a thing of the past. In Chicago, he will have better offensive weapons and a ferocious defense that will routinely provide good field position. Right now, I see Foles having one of his best seasons.
If Carr is right and Foles puts up those kind of numbers — 65% completion rate, 4,000 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions — then there’s no doubt that the Bears would be in contention for the NFC North title and a return to the playoffs.
