Daryl Morey: Rockets preparing for playoff series with Nuggets

If the NBA went straight to the playoffs following its COVID-19 stoppage, the Rockets would face the Nuggets in the first round.

Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey isn’t expecting the NBA to go straight to the playoffs, assuming the 2019-20 season eventually resumes after its current hiatus for the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

But even though the expectation is for some regular-season games to be played, the team is making preparations in case they are not.

Should the league go straight to the playoffs, the Rockets (40-24) would be the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference and slated to face the No. 3 Denver Nuggets (43-22). The Rockets and Nuggets split four meetings this season, with each team winning their two home games.

In a Facebook Q&A Sunday accompanying a documentary showing about the 2007-08 Rockets, Morey indicated that the current team was preparing to face the Nuggets. After all, even if the initial matchups were to change, they could still play Denver in a later round.

“We are prepping for playing Denver in case we go right to playoffs,” he wrote. “I don’t think we will go right to playoffs, though. But even when we play regular-season games, it is pretty likely we will play Denver.”

When asked when the NBA would return, Morey said:

I don’t know, but we will be back for sure.

The documentary on the 2007-08 team, centered around their historic winning streak of 22 games, can be viewed below.
