While the Chicago Bears defense didn’t replicate their dominant 2018 performance last season, they remained one of the best defenses in the NFL, allowing the fourth fewest points per game.
And considering they suffered some big blows to their starting defense, including the loss of defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and linebackers Roquan Smith and Danny Trevathan, that was impressive in itself. Especially when Chicago’s defense kept the team in playoff contention in December.
Trevathan, who signed a contract extension with the Bears this offseason, expects this defense to be a force to be reckoned with in 2020.
“We’re going to be monsters,” Trevathan said, via ChicagoBears.com. “There’s no doubt in my mind.”
Chicago returns most of their starters from the previous two seasons, and there are some injured stars that are returning to the starting lineup in 2020, including Trevathan, Smith and Hicks.
But Bears general manager Ryan Pace also made some moves this offseason to bolster the defense and fill some vacancies, including former All-Pro edge rusher Robert Quinn.
The addition of Quinn serves to better their pass rush, which is something that Trevathan recognizes. Now, teams are going to have to contend with the 1-2 punch of Khalil Mack and Quinn coming off the edge, as well as Hicks up the middle and the rest of that hungry front seven.
“Now you’ve got to watch this side, you’ve got to watch this side,” Trevathan said. “You’ve got to watch the middle. You’ve got to watch the back end. The front seven is going to be dangerous.”
There are some that believe that the 2020 Bears defense could rival the 2018 squad, which was an absolute dominant force just two years ago.
