The Washington Huskies have seen some major struggles shooting the ball early in the season, headlined by Butler transfer DJ Davis, who was billed as one of the nation’s best marksmen upon his arrival but hasn’t lived up to it just yet.
Through four games, Davis has made just 8 of his 31 field goal attempts, good for a meager 25. 8 percentage. Behind the three-point line, he’s a career 36.5 percent shooter but has converted on just 6 of his 22 shots from deep, which puts him at 27.3 percent on the year.
Despite his early struggles, Davis, a new father, still has the full trust of head coach Danny Sprinkle.
“He just needs to knock them down,” Sprinkle said after Washington’s win over UMass Lowell. “He’s getting good looks, a couple of them are about as open as he’ll get all year. Sometimes he’s actually a better shooter when guys are draped all over him and really contesting shots, but he’s probably a little bit out of rhythm.”
The head coach went on to note that Davis has struggled in every game outside of just the second half of Washington’s 77-62 win over Division II Seattle Pacific when the senior exploded for 18 points in the second half and shot 57 percent from behind the three-point line.
“That’s who he is,” Sprinkle continued. “That’s who we see every day in practice. I’m shocked when he misses. It’s just a matter of time, I’m not worried about DJ shooting the ball.”
