The Philadelphia 76ers are a team that is laced with proven veterans up and down the roster. There are guys like Danny Green, Seth Curry, Tobias Harris, and Joel Embiid to turn to and teach the younger players how to handle themselves in this league.
So for second-year guard Isaiah Joe, he has a pretty good bunch of vets he can turn to and learn the ropes.
Just as he did with Matisse Thybulle in the 2020-21 season, Green is now turning his attention to Joe in the 2021-22 season. The good thing about Joe is that he has been willing to learn and he has the support of the veteran guard.
“Oh, for sure,” beamed Green at practice on Sunday. “Yeah, definitely. He’s come along a lot. He has a lot of potential. I like what he brings to the table. Once his body develops a little bit more, he’s gonna be a great player in this league, a good player. He’s always open to listening and taking criticism.”
Playing under coach Doc Rivers should do wonders for him as well. Rivers coached JJ Redick during their time with the Los Angeles Clippers and he believes Joe can be a similar player to Redick in terms of coming off screens and knocking down jumpers.
“I think he has the ability,” said Rivers. “I don’t know if it’s at that level or not, but I think he can do more stuff though. I think he can put the ball on the floor a little bit, he’s doing that better. There’s very few JJ Redick’s that ever come around as far as what he did. That’s how JJ had to play.”
Joe, like Redick, is not afraid to pull the trigger from deep. It is clear that he is continuing to work on that part of his game and that he needs to be able to continue to work on it that way. His shooting is going to be so invaluable to this team going forward as they grow as a team.
“One thing I love about Isaiah is he’s got a quick trigger,” Rivers continued. “It’s very JJ Redick-ish. Probably the quickest, him and Georges (Niang), probably the two quickest trigger guys on our team in terms of getting it up quick. That’s hard to do. You have to be a skilled player to be able to do that.”
Joe has a lot of potential to be a star in his role with the Sixers and now he just has to grasp his opportunity. Having guys like Green and Rivers in his ear will do wonders for him.
