If you go out looking for criticism in this world that we live in, you’ll likely be able to find it fairly easily. Thanks to the world of social media that is everpresent, fanatics are able to be loud and opinionated, showing approval or disapproval whenever they see fit.
After the Oregon Ducks’ game against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, there was a lot of disapproval to go around. Dan Lanning and his squad did not meet expectations in a 49-3 drubbing down in Atlanta, and people online were vocal about it.

We at Ducks Wire have no room to criticize. On Saturday, I wrote a post highlighting some of the social media reactions after the game. It was popular, as you might expect. But while fans complain online about what they would have done differently, the coaches and players are left trying to shut out all of the noise.
On Monday night in his weekly press conference, Lanning was asked how that process was going for the team after Saturday’s loss.
“The opinions of everyone else outside of our building really don’t matter,” Lanning said. “It’s about the opinions in the room. That truly counts. I’ve said it before, nobody else is going to be playing a game, we got to play the game. You know, it always gets loudest when it’s easiest, and it’s really easy to be loud on social media today.”

While the sporting world got a few licks in on Oregon’s behalf over the weekend, the Ducks have tried to forge ahead and keep their heads down. Multiple outlets have named them one of the biggest losers of the week, but that doesn’t impact how Lanning and his team are preparing for next Saturday against Eastern Washington.
“You can’t put a lot of stock in that because they’re not gonna play the single game. We affect outcomes here,” Lanning said. “Our coaches, our players, we affect outcomes, not outside noise. So you know they smile in your face, right? And we know what it’s gonna look like when it doesn’t go right. The same thing’s to be said when you win. You can’t put too much stock in social media. You can’t get your worth from those moments.”
It may have been a tough 48 hours for Oregon players, but if you listen to the words of their coach, the mindset of the team is in the right place. They’re plowing ahead with noses to the grindstone, getting ready for the Eagles.
“I know they’re fired up to get back on the field again and prove they’re better than they played.”
