Lions head coach Dan Campbell: ‘We have to improve’ coming out of the bye week

The Detroit Lions come out of the Week 5 bye with a nice 3-1 record and a lofty status in every NFL power poll. It’s been a good start for the Lions, but head coach Dan Campbell knows it can be better.

In fact, Campbell is emphasizing how what they’ve accomplished thus far isn’t good enough. The Lions have to get better in some areas, and Campbell knows it.

“The emphasis really is still on improving. We have to improve. And it’s really about, ‘Alright, we’ve got to,’ – we did some things on Monday night that were – that’s more what we’re looking for, and so now that’s the floor,” Campbell stated on Monday. “How do we continue to play even better than that, how do we clean up some of the things that got us in trouble in that game? It wasn’t all perfect, and so I think you just continue to strive that way and try to be – you’re trying to play a perfect game.”

The Lions head to Dallas in Week 6 to play the 3-2 Cowboys, who are coming off a win over Pittsburgh on Sunday night. It’s a game Campbell knows his team must play better to beat.

“So, we’ve got things to clean up, and so it really is, it’s about improving,” Campbell continued. “That’s what you’ve got to do during the week.”

One example of an area where Campbell cited that the team could improve is in communication. And the head coach pointed the finger in the mirror on this one,

“We went through all of it with the coaches. I would tell you one, communication on my part. Overall communication, particularly with the staff, is where I can be much better,” Campbell said introspectively.
