Dallas Cowboys ‘never really though’ CeeDee Lamb would be available

“I didn’t [think it was possible], but I’m happy that’s where I ended up,” Lamb told Star Magazine contributor Jonny Auping.

Former Oklahoma star receiver CeeDee Lamb fell into the laps of the Dallas Cowboys at No. 17. With teams like the Raiders and Broncos electing to go with Henry Ruggs III and Jerry Jeudy, Lamb found himself land with a Super Bowl contender.

“I didn’t [think it was possible], but I’m happy that’s where I ended up,” Lamb told Star Magazine contributor Jonny Auping.

The feeling was mutual. Stephen Jones told Auping he and the rest of the Cowboys front office believed Lamb to be a top-10 pick. “We never really thought we had a chance to get him,” Jones said. “Every mock draft we did, we had him long gone.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Auping that he had multiple trade offers to move back in the draft but that Lamb “earned the pick.”

Sliding to No. 17 was not something Lamb and his camp predicted but it was not the fault of his own, just other teams were taking offensive tackles and other positions rather than a receiver.

“Honestly I didn’t know if they were going to take me,” Lamb said. “When my phone rang it surprised me. Everything that I dreamed of was in that phone call.”
