Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott on Monday will sign his Exclusive Franchise tender for $31,409,000 for one year per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. His deal officially pushed 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out of the top 10 highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL by average annual value.
Here’s the top 11 according to Over the Cap:
Russell Wilson
Ben Roethlisberger
Jared Goff
Aaron Rodgers
Kirk Cousins
Carson Wentz
Dak Prescott
Matt Ryan
Ryan Tannehill
Jacoby Brissett
Jimmy Garoppolo
Players like Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes will soon earn extensions that put them into this group and push Garoppolo even further down the list assuming he stays under his current contract with the 49ers.
Among the top 11 highest-paid quarterbacks Garoppolo finished last season second in completion rate, seventh in yards, fourth in touchdowns, fourth in touchdown rate, second in yards per attempt and fourth in passer rating.
He also guided the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL, and helped the team to a 13-3 record and a Super Bowl berth.
While Garoppolo’s contract seemed lofty when he signed it during the. 2018 offseason after just seven NFL starts, it’s turning into a relative bargain. If he progresses in his second full season as a starter, he’ll be an even bigger steal making $27 million annually.
His deal is structured in such a way that the 49ers have a trap door to get out of the contract if he regresses in 2020.
San Francisco took a pretty significant gamble signing Garoppolo to a long-term deal in 2018, but it’s worked out so far, and will continue to work in their favor as long as he continues out-performing most of the quarterbacks making more than he does.
