Ryan Linthicum’s journey at Clemson has been about development. Despite being ranked as the nation’s top center by Rivals coming out of high school, Linthicum spent his first three years working behind veteran Will Putnam. During that time, he focused on refining his skills and improving his physical conditioning, preparing for when his opportunity would finally come.
That opportunity has arrived, as Linthicum secured the starting center role through his hard work in spring practice and fall camp. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has been quick to praise the redshirt junior for his standout performance in the Tigers’ first two games. “The MVP after two games is Ryan Linthicum; that everybody had written off,” Swinney said. “He’s done a tremendous job so far.”
The coaching staff had debated bringing in a transfer portal center before spring, but Linthicum’s progress convinced them to stay with him. His leadership on the offensive line has contributed to improved play, and his ability to make smart decisions up front has helped quarterback Cade Klubnik feel more secure in the pocket. Swinney added, “He’s made the right calls, and that’s given Cade a lot of confidence.”
