The College Football season is rapidly approaching, and schedule announcements are coming in fast and furious. One of the best rivalry games on the schedule was announced on Tuesday.
The SMU Mustangs and TCU Horned Frogs will face off in the Battle For The Iron Skillet at 3 p.m. on Sept. 21 on the CW. The winner of the game receives an iron skillet as the trophy.
This rivalry has taken place since 1915, with only seven years without a game on the calendar. The last time they did not play was back in 2020. Many times, these two were in the same conference, and this year’s matchup will be between Big 12 and ACC opponents with SMU’s move.
The current agreement has the Mustangs and Horned Frogs alternating home and away through the 2025 season.

The first game was won by TCU, and the most recent was won by TCU. Last season it was 34-17 Horned Frogs. Over the years though, it’s been fairly close, as TCU holds a 53-42 lead, and seven times it has tied. The SMU Mustangs dominated the series from 1972-1986 with 16 straight wins.
This season, the game will be played at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. SMU received votes in the first Associated Press poll that came out earlier in the week.
The Mustangs are 4th on the list behind Louisville, Virginia Tech and Boise State. TCU did not make the list or receive votes, but five Big 12 teams were ranked, and three others picked up votes.
