CU women’s basketball stuns No. 14 West Virginia in Big 12 opener

CU fought back from a 16-point deficit to upset No. 14 West Virginia

CU women’s basketball head coach JR Payne has become one of the best leaders in school history. After Saturday’s 65-60 upset of No. 14 West Virginia, her new-look Buffs squad has proven that while the faces have changed, the winning will continue under Payne.

In the Buffs’ Big 12 Conference opener, they were 47-31 with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. CU would outscore the Mountaineers 34-13 the rest of the way to pull out the five-point win in front of the home crowd.

Senior guard Frida Formann led the way with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Jade Masogayo and Lior Garzon added 18 and 14, respectively.

Formann spoke after the game about the Buffs’ impressive comeback win.

“Coming back from being down 16 against a ranked opponent, I think we showed that we’re still scrappy,” Formann said (h/t CUBuffs.com). “We still have that underdog mentality of anyone who comes and wants to play with us, we’re here to beat them. We’re not going to give up for anyone.”

Colorado improved to 10-2 (1-0 Big 12) and will next face TCU in Fort Worth on Jan. 1 (5:30 p.m. MT, ESPN+).
