CU women struggle on the boards in loss to Utah

The CU women have now dropped five of their last six games

JR Payne said she doesn’t get disappointed too often but after her Buffs were outrebounded 43-20 against Utah on Sunday, she was duly displeased.

“There aren’t too many times I could say I’m disappointed in how we performed but I am disappointed today, we’re better than that,” Payne said.

Besides Mya Hollingshed’s seven boards, no Buff had more than three in a 78-67 loss to the Utes.

Colorado, which began the season 13-0, has now dropped five of its last six games. The Buffs’ downfall has been swift and unless they can rebound (literally) soon, their NCAA Tournament dreams could be crushed.

What made Sunday’s loss even more head-scratching was that the Buffs had just beaten Utah in Salt Lake City two days prior. Also, CU’s offensive numbers were admittedly formidable in the Boulder rematch; Hollingshed scored a season-high 28 and the Buffs shot 44%.

Payne believed the Buffs simply didn’t have the same energy on their home court. Besides the poor rebounding, Colorado struggled to defend the outside, which led Utah to drain nine 3-pointers.

The Buffs (14-5, 3-5 Pac-12) will have a few needed days to recoup before hosting Washington State on Friday.

“You look at it, you figure it out and you work; that’s what we’ll continue to do,” Payne said.
