Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs named NFC defensive player of the month for September

Trevon Diggs is balling out of his mind. The 51st overall pick of the 2020 draft is tied for the NFL lead with three interceptions while leading the league in passes defended with six.  He’s also the only player who has picked off a pass in every game this season.

The Dallas Cowboys defense is much improved from a season ago and Diggs has been a huge reason why. His play hasn’t gone unnoticed as the league named the Cowboys’ top cornerback the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September.

Diggs is on an unreal pace to start his career. He already has six career interceptions and 20 passes defended in just 15 games. Mind you, he missed four games as a rookie last season with a broken foot so who knows what his totals would be had he not gotten injured.

The competition Diggs has faced so far in 2021 has been big time. After holding Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to one reception for 10 yards on three targets in Week 1 he held Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers, one of the league’s best route runners, to just three receptions on six targets a week later.

This past Monday, rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith of the Philadelphia Eagles had to deal with Diggs, and it didn’t turn out well for him. Smith was held to two receptions for nine yards when Diggs covered him; talk about growing pains for the young man.

If Diggs can keep up this kind of production for another 14 games he’ll be entering Pro Bowl/All-Pro territory in just his second year.
