When the Dallas Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott for the season, it was only a matter of time before they brought in another quarterback in order to make it through the season. With veteran Andy Dalton and undrafted rookie free agent Ben DiNucci already on the active roster, it’s unlikely that whoever was brought in would see any meaningful playing time, but it’s best to be prepared.
On Monday the Cowboys made that move, signing career backup Garrett Gilbert away from the Cleveland Browns practice squad. He has spent time with four different teams since he went undrafted in 2014, but his most snaps as a professional came in the now defunct Alliance of American Football League where he was about as good as they come:
Prior to the league suspending operations, Gilbert led the AAF with 2,152 passing yards. He also led the league with a 99.1 passer rating and was also second in the league with 13 touchdown passes.
He has thrown just six passes in his NFL career and unless disaster strikes what’s left of the Dallas quarterback depth chart, don’t expect that sample size to increase any time soon.
