It must be football season again, because the time honored tradition of national media “insiders” breaking things that have been discussed locally for days is back like it never left. There are generally two types of news reports when it comes to NFL happenings. There’s the breaking news, where reporters simply cannot sit on the information and it generally is a race between local beat writers and national guys with agent contacts. Then there’s lesser news, which local writers cover but national media wait to discuss until they can garner the most eyeballs.
Often times, this takes the form of Sunday acknowledgements. While the league office uses Friday afternoons to release news they have to, but would rather not be on continuous loops on TV shows, national reporters hold this lesser news to try and drum up views and clicks on Sunday mornings. The news that Dallas is closing in on an agreement with free agent tackle Jason Peters has fallen into this category for NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The #Cowboys are working toward a deal for former #Eagles star and future Hall of Fame tackle Jason Peters, sources say, after a successful visit this past week. Nothing is done, but there is mutual interest in getting done. Peters could land with Dallas by Monday.

Cowboys fans who are plugged in, thanks to the local media, has known every step of the process; from Peters meeting with Jerry Jones, taking a physical, to the report that if anything were to happen it wouldn’t be until Monday. All of that occured on Friday; nothing has changed since except for the fact that the regular-season process is kicking in for all involved in the league.
The Cowboys will have to release a player in order to make room for Peters and seeing that the league office was closed after the visit and physical concluded, it makes perfect sense why no actual transactions were reported.
Dallas is looking to find a veteran addition after losing Tyron Smith for at least the majority of the regular season. First-round pick Tyler Smith is slated to be the starter in Week 1, as even with a Peters signing it’s unlikely he’s ready to be a starter in just six (or less) days.
The Cowboys worked Tyl. Smith at left guard for the entirety of training camp and he’s been dealing with a high-ankle sprain. The situation is even more tumultuous because backup right tackle Josh Ball didn’t perform very well in his three exhibition starts on the left side. Matt Waletzko, taken in the fifth-round was expected to be in the mix, but missed all of camp with a shoulder injury, returning to debut in the final preseason game.
The Cowboys need help, but how quickly Peters is able to be up to speed is still a question mark. That’s still to be determined, but there’s been no change in this situation since Friday evening.
