We may have just finished with the 2020 NFL Draft, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead to next year, is it?
The 2021 NFL Draft is already getting broken down by a number of draft analysts, and it’s set to be one of the more entertaining classes we’ve seen in a while, judging by the talent at the top. Above all other prospects stands Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, who stole the show in 2018 when he burst onto the scene and won a National Championship in his freshman year. He almost followed it up again this past year, losing to Joe Burrow and LSU in the championship game. There will obviously be other big names in the class, but it seems like a foregone conclusion that Lawrence will be the first player taken off the board, and teams will likely Lose for Lawrence in the NFL this year, much like they Tanked for Tua last year.
So what are the chances that the Washington Redskins are one of those teams that finds themselves in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes a year from now? It might be more likely than you thought, according to our friends over at USA TODAY’s Touchdown Wire.
Ron Rivera did not draft Dwayne Haskins. If the new Washington coach gets the feeling the former Ohio State quarterback is not the answer, he isn’t going to wait around and watch Haskins fail. A season like 2019 and Washington could be in a position to choose Lawrence. Lets’s only point to Arizona and Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray to realize how fast the QB carousel whirls.
This is not to say that the Redskins would be intentionally losing to have a chance at Lawrence, but it could happen for no other reason than they’re bad again in 2020. Most preseason projections have them slotted to finish in the bottom five teams of the league, and some Vegas Sportsbooks have made them one of the favorites to finish 2020 with the most losses in the NFL.
So what if the Redskins lucked into both Chase Young and Trevor Lawrence in two years? Man, would that be something? I’ll tell you one thing — if Washington can’t find a way to make the playoffs with both Young and Lawrence on their roster, the teams should be stolen away from Dan Snyder and given to someone else.
