The Brooklyn Nets have been busy this offseason as they have traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks and re-signed center Nic Claxton to a four-year, $100 million contract. At this point of the summer, Brooklyn has re-signed most of their free-agents, except for one player that is still on the market at this point.
Guard Lonnie Walker IV is still a free-agent as of this writing and given how the 2023-24 season ended for him, most had assumed that he would be playing for another team next season. While Walker playing elsewhere is still a possibility, it stands to reason that he could come back to the Nets given that the franchise is now in a rebuild and is most likely continuing to evaluate everyone on the roster.
Walker is still just 25 years old and he could benefit from spending another year with Brooklyn, assuming that he is able to carve out a more substantial role than he had last season. Granted, Walker was on pace to be a prime candidate for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award with how he played during the first month of the season.
A lot happened with the Nets last season, including a coaching change that did not entirely change up the rotation, but did change the role of players like Walker that could have benefitted from more playing time down the stretch for a team struggling to remain in playoff contention.
Ultimately, Walker could be someone that sees an elevation in his role within Brooklyn’s offense, especially with Bridges no longer on the team. Plus, if the Nets end up trading more of the veterans, that will only open up more opportunity for Walker, who seems to be a fan favorite for his effort and highlight-reel plays.
