The Miami Dolphins are committed to getting their offensive line group right. The team is certainly in desperate need of better play on the line of scrimmage and while the team’s new additions this offseason will go a long way in ensuring that, the players will still ultimately need to execute and the coaching staff is going to have to make personnel decisions to find the best combination of five. The more positions you can play, the better chances you have of playing for Miami. That versatility is one of the primary reasons veteran offensive lineman Jesse Davis is favored to be a returning starter for Miami in 2020 — although where he plays is up for debate.
Miami had Davis prepared to play both tackle spots and inside at offensive guard last season — but now Davis is even getting prepared for a possible role at center. The revelation comes from Davis during a media session this weekend.
“I’ve played every position besides center like you mentioned…however, I have been playing center this week. That’s a little nugget for you,” Davis told the media.
“It’s just a little extra practice for everybody to get the early group going; but right now, it’s just been – we don’t have enough centers out there right now, so they’re like, ‘hey, why don’t you (snap)? Let’s see what happens.’ So right now, I don’t want to go out there and put my guys in a bad spot so I have to learn this stuff. I have to make the right calls and put everybody in a position to be successful and see the reps and get the reps right. I think it’s just something to mess with, especially with this COVID stuff. You never know who’s going to be up, who’s going to be down; so I’m excited for it.”
The odds of Miami getting pressed to play Davis at center are low unless the team incurs injury — but it serves as further testament to how much the Dolphins like Davis that he’s now primed to play possibly each of the offensive line’s five spots at any given time.
