Could Cooper Weiss be the next Diamond Hogs shortstop?

The Miami (OH) transfer was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year and he hit 12 homers, too.

Dave Van Horn doesn’t have a single shortstop on his roster right now. So there’s room for Cooper Weiss if he wants it.

Arkansas hosted the Miami (OH) transfer on Thursday as Weiss, the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year, narrowed his destination to two final locations. Fayetteville is one.

Shortstop was a position of struggle at the plate for the Diamond Hogs in 2023. John Bolton started a majority of the games there but hit .206 with a .248 slugging percentage. Harold Coll, his primary back-up, hit .232 in 19 games and elected to transfer.

Weiss led Miami in batting and was second on the team in both on-base percentage and slugging, ultimately slashing .303/.424/.567. He stole 17 bases and bopped 12 home runs alongside being named the league’s best defender.

In other words, he would fit right into Van Horn’s plans.

No timetable has been set for Weiss’ decision. The Fort Myers, Florida, native started his career at Coastal Carolina before transferring to Miami in 2022.
