At least for now, five-star freshman Cormani McClain is not a candidate to get snaps at cornerback in place of the injured Travis Hunter. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was asked during his weekly presser on Tuesday if McClain was ready for game action and he simply replied, “No.”
What’s holding him back? “He is,” Sanders added.
Through the Buffs’ first three games, the prized Florida prospect has yet to play a defensive snap after garnering plenty of buzz prior to the season. McClain, however, has only been in Boulder since the end of June, so there’s no reason to press the panic button yet.
With Hunter out for at least the next three weeks, Omarion Cooper becomes CU’s top cornerback. We will likely see a combination of Kyndrich Breedlove, who replaced Hunter on Saturday against Colorado State, Carter Stoutmire (if healthy) and Travis Jay (also if healthy).
“The plan at corner is a corner by committee,” Sanders said on Tuesday. “At practice, we’re going to see who steps up.”
