CONMEBOL has confirmed that teams at the Copa América will be allowed an extra substitution in the case of suspected head trauma or concussion.
The South American governing body announced the decision on Tuesday, ahead of the tournament’s kickoff next month in the United States.
Teams will be allowed a sixth substitution if a coach notifies the referee or fourth official through the use of a pink substitution pass.
Should a player be removed for a concussion substitution, they would be required to go to the locker room or hospital to be assessed.
“The substitution for concussion will take place regardless of the number of substitutions until the moment it happens,” CONMEBOL said. “When the concussion substitution takes place, the opposing team will automatically be allowed to make an additional substitution.”
Team doctors will have 24 hours to submit a medical report to CONMEBOL about the player.
