Contrary to an initial report from FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the New Orleans Saints have not requested a head coach interview with Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb. That report was shot down by NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
So why all the fuss about Webb? Just 29 years old, he first played college football behind Baker Mayfield at Texas Tech before transferring to the California Golden Bears once Patrick Mahomes arrived on campus. Webb spent all seven seasons of NFL career in the state of New York, all with either the Giants, Jets or Buffalo Bills. At the conclusion of his time under center, Webb took the job as Broncos quarterbacks coach under former Saints head coach Sean Payton. Webb has spent time the majority of his time in Denver working with current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson and Broncos rookie Bo Nix.
Webb’s quarterback experience along with the help of Payton offensively, has helped contribute to Nix’s success down the stretch of this season. Nix’s impressive turnaround will more than likely have himself in the Rookie of the Year conversation next to Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers at season’s end.
So Webb clearly has some fans in league circles. With ties to Payton, it wouldn’t surprise us if the team was looking in this direction. However aside from being under Payton, the development of Nix after what he looked like early on this year, is something to take note of when considering Webb as a head coach candidate.
But this is the second time a Broncos coach candidate has been linked to the Saints by a national outlet only to be shot down by local reporting, after the same thing happened with David Shaw (the former Stanford head coach and Broncos senior personnel exec) earlier this week. Maybe Payton is selling his team’s assistants as viable candidates harder than the Saints are interested in buying, but it’s something to watch moving forward.
