The Tennessee Titans and running back Derrick Henry continue to work through the process of trying to come to an agreement on a long-term deal.
The Titans placed the franchise tag on Henry after being unable to come to terms on an agreement earlier in the offseason, but have until July 15 to get something done.
If not, Henry, who has already signed his franchise tender and won’t be holding out, will play the 2020 campaign on the tag, which pays him about $10.2 million.
Titans general manager Jon Robinson says the talks between the two sides are ongoing and that things remain positive, as John Glennon of Sports Illustrated reported.
“We had a phone call last week and a phone call the week before that,” Robinson said. “We just kind of continue to work through things. The conversations have been positive between me and the reps there.
“Again, just trying to find some common ground. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Derrick is an important part of what we do. Just trying to find a spot where we all need to be and where we all want to be.”
Despite no deal being reached, Robinson noted that it has not impacted Henry’s offseason preparation in meetings — and we certainly know it hasn’t impacted his physical preparation, either.
Henry is extremely important to what the Titans do offensively, so I continue to believe something will get done before the July deadline. If not, Henry could be looking at the franchise tag yet again in 2021.
