The Green Bay Packers and representatives for running back Aaron Jones continue to talk about a new contract for the emerging star runner.
Chris Cabott, one of Jones’ agents, told Rob Demovsky of ESPN that contract negotiations will continue between his agency and the Packers.
“There have been conversations, and there will continue to be,” Cabott told Demovsky.
Jones, who is coming off a breakout 2019 season, will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2020. He positioned himself for a big payday by gaining over 1,500 total yards and scoring 19 total touchdowns while playing in all 16 games for the Packers in 2019.
Momentum for a new deal could build if Jones, a fifth-round pick in 2017, is motivated to sign a new contract this offseason. He’s made under $2 million during his first three NFL seasons and could be ready to sign a lucrative second contract now, even if he could theoretically maximize his value by producing another standout season in 2020.
The Packers just drafted running back A.J. Dillon in the second round but should be highly interested in retaining Jones, who is one of the NFL’s most dangerous slashing runners and an increasingly valuable player in the passing game. He tied for the NFL lead in total touchdowns scored and set new career highs in both catches and receiving yards during the 2019 season.
When mutual interest in a new deal exists, a new deal usually happens. And both sides are working towards making it happen.
Jones said he wants to be a “lifelong Packer,” highlighting his desire to remain in Green Bay long-term. Agreeing to a second contract with the Packers would be a logical next step in achieving the goal.
