The Indianapolis Colts are in need of a quarterback in the worst way, which means they have to consider all of their options. That includes a potential trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.
While James Palmer of NFL Network reported Friday that the Colts have some level of interest in Mayfield, the two sides haven’t talked yet. Now, Zak Keefer of The Athletic reported that it’s unlikely the Colts make that move to bring in Mayfield.
“Mayfield wanting the Colts is just one side of the equation, remember.
More important: Do the Colts want Mayfield?
To date, I haven’t heard anything to suggest they do. It doesn’t mean a deal won’t happen — the Colts’ options are limited, remember — but I see it as unlikely, based on conversations Friday. Over the last few months, the Colts were determined to move on from Wentz, convinced that he wasn’t the right fit as franchise quarterback. It’s hard to see them believing Mayfield would be — even as a stopgap — while they continue to look for their quarterback of the future in the draft.”
It’s hard to sift through all of the smoke and mirrors when it comes to trade reports. The Colts are a team that keeps everything pretty close to the vest so it’s hard to truly get a read on this situation. So every report should be taken with a grain of salt.
One would think the Colts learned from the Carson Wentz situation in 2021. Trading premium draft capital for a former first-round pick with reported leadership issues and inconsistent play didn’t work well for Indy. It led to them being back at square one at the game’s most important position without a first-round pick.
If the compensation falls to a mid-Day 3 pick, then the Colts may have to consider it. But if the Colts are parting ways with one of their picks on Day 2, it’s hard to see Chris Ballard making that same move just one year removed from the Wentz trade.
As is the case with these situations, everything is fluid. It’s best to not get too invested either way because everything can change on a dime.
Given that the Browns have to trade Mayfield and the fact that the Colts need a quarterback means we’re likely talking about this until a move is made one way or another.
