Comparing Tua Tagovailoa’s WRs: Alabama vs. Miami Dolphins

Former Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa will play with a new set of WRs for the Miami Dolphins, but where do they stack up to what he’s used to?

Smith size:

Hurns size:

Height: 6-3, Weight: 195

Allen Hurns will likely serve as a veteran backup with a mentoring role in 2020, but he’ll still see some playing time on the field to help with rotations. He may not be a name that’s called often, but he will certainly be given a considerable amount of looks on the field.

According to Dolphins Wire’s Kyle Crabbs, “Hurns is the savvy player who makes the most of his reps without elite physical tools.”

While Smith hardly ever spent time on the bench as a key contributor to the Crimson Tide offense in the last two seasons, it’s hard to deny that the description of Hurns’ play style is similar to that of Smith’s.

Smith was not the tallest, strongest or most crisp route-runner on the Alabama team, but his contributions were felt largely by his speed and poise with the football.

Yes, Hurns is older and may not be as fresh as Smith, but the style of play is similar which will lead to Hurns being used in a similar role: he’ll make the plays – hopefully- when he’s called upon.

Smith has arguably been the quietest receiver from Alabama. He did his job and wasn’t seen as a player that required much of the limelight. I expect Hurns to serve in a similar role in the Tua Tagovailoa era of Miami Dolphins football.
