Commanders agree to trade DE Montez Sweat to Bears

The Commanders agree to send Montez Sweat to the Bears.

The Washington Commanders have made a move ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. Washington agrees to send defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears for a second-round pick, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Sweat, 27, is in the final year of his rookie contract and leads the Commanders with 6.5 sacks in 2023. The Commanders had been fielding calls for Sweat and fellow defensive end Chase Young.

Sweat, a first-round pick in 2019, has 35.5 career sacks, and his career-high is nine, set in 2020. He is on pace to exceed that number in 2023.

Washington had preferred to extend Sweat, but the change in ownership stalled those plans. New owner Josh Harris took over the Commanders on July 20.

According to Adam Schefter, the second-round pick is in 2024.
