The Indianapolis Colts have some big decisions to make this offseason and among them will include what to do at the quarterback position and specifically, Jacoby Brissett.
A season that was truly a tale of two halves, Brissett started off on fire throwing 14 touchdown passes during the first six games but hit a massive regression rut that saw him throw just four touchdown passes during the final eight games.
While it remains to be seen if Brissett is the quarterback in 2020, general manager Chris Ballard said they want to see more consistency from him if he is under center.
“I think time will show us…He has to be more consistent: I think he’s got the talent. He’s got to be more consistent,” Ballard said at his year-end presser. “We do think Jacoby has talent. We do think he’s a great teammate, and he’s a great leader. But like I said with any position, we’ll continue to evaluate, and if we’ve got a chance to upgrade at any position, we’ll do that.”
Brissett’s faults were magnified during the second half of the season. His lack of desire to push the ball downfield and his inability to anticipate cause major problems on the offensive side of the ball. It was one of the reasons why the team finished the season 2-7 after a 5-2 start.
Brissett’s struggles were obvious in his own right, but it also didn’t help that the majority of his skill positions suffered massive injuries.
“When you look at Jacoby’s performance early in the season, versus the second half of the season, all of a sudden you flip out T.Y. Hilton, (Chester Rogers, Eric Ebron), and then you have to flip in a new group in there, I’ve got to do a better job of getting them enough for him to be successful and for our staff to be successful,” said Ballard.
It will be interesting to see what the Colts do this offseason and it isn’t at all clear yet if they truly want to make a change at the quarterback position.
If they don’t, however, the Colts will want to see more consistency from the 27-year-old.
