Colts vs Giants Week 17 snap count notes and observations

Let’s dive into the notes and observations from the Indianapolis Colts’ Week 17 snap count totals vs. the Giants.

Following another brutal loss for the Indianapolis Colts that puts to bed their playoff hopes, Pro Football Focus has tallied the team’s snap count figures from Sunday’s game.

So, what stood out playing time-wise on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball?

At this stage of the game, with only one regular season game to go, there aren’t a ton of surprises when it comes to these snap count figures. By now, playing time for each player is pretty well established.

However, having said that, each week, there are a few noteworthy observations to make.

With help from PFF, here are the Colts’ snap count figures from Week 17, along with some quick notes.

Colts Offense

Joe Flacco    77
Mark Glowinski    77
Ryan Kelly    77
Quenton Nelson    77
Bernhard Raimann    77
Matt Goncalves    77
Alec Pierce    73
Michael Pittman Jr.    72
Jonathan Taylor    68
Josh Downs    47
Andrew Ogletree    41
Mo Alie-Cox    31
Kylen Granson    31
Trey Sermon    7
Adonai Mitchell    7
Ashton Dulin    6
Tyler Goodson    2

Quick takeaways

– The Colts must be liking what they’re seeing from Ogletree. In recent weeks, it’s been the norm for him to lead the tight end position in snaps. Of note, both Alie-Cox and Granson are free agents in 2025.

– To a degree, it’s just how it goes, but with the Colts heavy usage of two tight end sets that does limit the number of snaps that Josh Downs is on the field. This week’s snap count totals among the receivers are fairly consistent with what we’ve seen this season.

Colts Defense

Jaylon Jones    56
Julian Blackmon    56
Zaire Franklin    56
Kenny Moore II    56
Nick Cross    56
E.J. Speed    55
DeForest Buckner    50
Grover Stewart    39
Samuel Womack III    38
Kwity Paye    36
Dayo Odeyingbo    33
Tyquan Lewis    26
Laiatu Latu    25
Jaylon Carlies    18
Raekwon Davis    9
Taven Bryan    6
Rodney Thomas II    1

Quick takeaways

– We’ve discussed this before, and everyone knows it, but the Colts have to improve their defensive tackle depth in the offseason. In a must-win game, you’re going to rely more on Buckner and Stewart, but the snap count discrepency between them and the duo of Raekwon Davis and Taven Bryan isn’t all that different from what we’ve seen this season. Over the course of 17 games, that’s a hefty workload on the shoulders of Buckner and Stewart.

– With the Colts healthy at linebacker, we saw Jaylon Carlies take over for Grant Stuard and slide back into that third linebacker role. His 18 snaps tell us that this is how often the Colts’ were in their base 4-3 look. For the most part, Indianapolis went with additional defensive backs.

– Interestingly, Laiatu Latu went from leading the Colts’ defensive end unit in snaps against Tennessee to being fourth on Sunday. When that position group is healthy, the Colts have tried to get him on the field for more obvious passing downs, which it’s not as if there weren’t any against the Giants who had only 15 first downs in the game. While it’s not as if Latu’s snap count total is all that different from the others, I don’t have much of an answer as to why his opportunities were decreased this week.
