Since becoming the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts, Chris Ballard has made it clear he prefers to add draft capital rather than lose when it comes to trading.
Holding the No. 13 overall pick, there is the smallest of chances the Colts trade up in the 2020 draft to secure their potential future quarterback. While most would expect that trade to be into the top five area, they didn’t go quite that high in Draft Wire’s latest mock draft following Super Bowl LIV.
Instead, the Colts moved up just two spots to select quarterback Jordan Love out of Utah State.
This may seem early for Love, but after a solid week at the Senior Bowl, he just might be the clear-cut QB4 in this year’s class. That being the case, don’t be surprised if a team like the Colts make a small move up the board to make sure they land him. Jacoby Brissett would be a solid bridge option while Love smooths out the rough edges in his game.
The next few months will feature an interesting discussion. Do the Colts feel as strongly about drafting a quarterback as the fanbase does? Is Ballard willing to trade up for a quarterback in this draft?
The Colts keep everything so close to the vest that we likely won’t know for sure until the draft arrives and they make their move—whatever it may be.
Trading up for a quarterback might have fans expecting Tua Tagovailoa or even Justin Herbert but if the Colts feel they can tap into that potential that Love has shown on tape, it is certainly something they need to consider.
There is also the chance that Love can fall into their lap at No. 13. His Senior season may give some teams pause given the numbers he put up, but there is a lot to unload with that, including a change in offensive coordinator and a loss in several weapons.
Love might be the guy for the Colts, and it will be interesting to see how they feel about him come draft night.
