Colts trade up for QB Jordan Love in Touchdown Wire mock draft

Will the Colts make a move for a QB?

The Indianapolis Colts have already made one blockbuster trade this offseason and with the 2020 NFL draft under a month away, some believe another trade could be possible.

Currently holding the No. 34 pick as their first selection in the draft, the Colts don’t have any draft capital on Day 1. Needing to find a potential franchise quarterback, there is a chance they move up a few spots to grab one if a prospect they like falls near their current spot.

In Touchdown Wire’s latest mock draft conducted by Mark Schofield, the Colts moved up three spots in a trade with the 49ers to grab Utah State quarterback Jordan Love at No. 31.

The Colts and the 49ers already executed one pre-draft trade, with the Colts sending San Francisco the 13th overall selection for defensive lineman DeForest Buckner. But they are not done trading, and with quarterback Jordan Love falling almost out of the first round, the Colts dip back into the first and grab their quarterback of the future.

From San Francisco’s perspective, currently without another selection until the fifth round, some additional picks on Day 2 would be a nice acquisition. For the Colts, despite signing Philip Rivers in free agency, the veteran QB is probably a one- to two-year plan at most. In Love, the Colts and Frank Reich can acquire their quarterback for the next five years, but put him on a developmental arc similar to what Patrick Mahomes enjoyed behind Alex Smith in Kansas City.

Love has a tremendous arm and upper-level athleticism, but he’ll need some time to develop. Landing in Indianapolis with a coach in Reich who has some experience developing a QB is an ideal spot.

Love is a favorite for the Colts potential prospects but after they traded out of other No. 13 spot to get DeForest Buckner, some wondered if it may have been due to the fact that they might not love this quarterback class.

Love has tremendous upside and with development under Frank Reich and Philip Rivers, he could certainly reach that. Even if he falls to a spot where the Colts can trade up for him, it remains to be seen if they will.

The Colts definitely need to address the quarterback position in the draft. It’s simply a question of when they will do it.
