Colts trade up for QB Jordan Love in latest Draft Wire mock

Jordan Love might go before the top 10.

The Indianapolis Colts are among the teams that could be selecting a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. It all just depends on how big of a need they truly see it being this offseason.

Currently holding the No. 13 pick in the draft, the Colts have the ammo to move up if they want to. Though it is unlike general manager Chris Ballard to give away picks, there is always a chance he moves up for a player he feels will make the team better.

Luke Easterling of Draft Wire conducted his post-NFL combine mock draft and had the Colts moving up all the way to No. 8 in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals to grab Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.

Jacoby Brissett did an admirable job of keeping the Indy offense afloat after Andrew Luck’s retirement, but I’m betting the Colts would like a better long-term solution at quarterback. If that’s their move, don’t count out a bold move to make sure they get their man. In this scenario, Love would likely be the target, despite the rough edges in his game. He’s got the potential to be a stellar pro if the Colts can give him time to develop.

Given where the Colts are currently sitting, Love has been a favorite among the projected selections for Indy. Gifted with a plus arm, mobility and athleticism, Love has the type of potential that makes sense for a team like the Colts to target.

Though his numbers waned during his final season, there is context to his struggles. He lost his entire offense and got a new coaching staff in 2019, which led to 17 interceptions.

The Colts have the mindset, coaching staff and patience to mold a player like Love and get his career started on the right track. Whether they want to spend a first-round pick on him remains to be seen, but he would bring a bright outlook to the future for Indy.
