The Indianapolis Colts are signing kicker Matt Gay to the practice squad, per his agent.
During the team’s off-day on Monday, Gay was one of four players who attended a tryout for the Colts, along with three other running backs.
The Colts are bringing Gay onto the practice squad in case they feel the need to part ways with undrafted rookie Rodrigo Blankenship, who converted 2-of-3 field-goal attempts and both of his extra-point attempts.
Gay, 26, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round in 2019. He converted 27-of-35 field-goal attempts (77.1%) and 43-of-48 extra-point attempts (89.6) during the 2019 season. He was waived after the Buccaneers signed veteran Ryan Succop.
It will be interesting to see what the Colts do with their kicker situation and a corresponding move should be on the way given that the practice squad is currently at capacity.
