Though it is still over two months away, the 2020 NFL draft is the crown jewel for the Indianapolis Colts given the front office’s affinity for building through the offseason’s main event.
The Colts currently have nine picks in April’s draft and according to Tankathon, they will have one of the highest-value draft classes in the league. Based on Jimmy Johnson’s point system for determining a pick’s value for trades, the Colts have the seventh-highest point value for the 2020 draft class.
Now, this doesn’t mean the Colts are going to have one of the best draft classes in the NFL. What it means is they are projected to have the chance to draft high-value players with their selections. It all matters on what type of players Chris Ballard drafts.
Some of this can change leading up to and even during the draft as Ballard has made trades for draft picks in each of the three years he’s been leading the front office.
The Colts have several needs entering the draft and while free agency will help them add some depth, their main objective is to make the majority of their additions through the draft.
Quarterback is the biggest need on the roster but it isn’t clear if how the Colts want to go about addressing that position. Then they need to add to the wide receiver room and the defensive line, which they will have plenty of resources to do.
The offseason moves haven’t started yet but the Colts should be in line for another high-value draft class.
