In their latest edition of NFL power rankings, USA TODAY has the Indianapolis Colts moving up two spots from No. 14 to No. 12 as free agency comes to an end.
Here’s what Nate Davis had to say about the current standing of the Colts as the 2021 NFL draft approaches.
12. Colts (14): Aside from the need to replace retired LT Anthony Castonzo, everything hinges on Frank Reich’s ability to restore new QB Carson Wentz to his pre-injury, 2017 MVP-level form. Accomplish that, and this team can legitimately challenge Kansas City for AFC supremacy.
The Colts decided to stay relatively quiet in free agency. They re-signed some key players like T.Y. Hilton and Xavier Rhodes while adding depth and competition to the offensive line.
But now the draft will force them to address some very serious needs if they are looking to compete in 2021. They have to find a left tackle to replace the retired Castonzo while the pass rush remains a major question mark given the inexperience in the room.
If the Colts want a chance to compete against teams like the Chiefs and Bills in the playoffs, they need Wentz to return to form while also getting major contributions on the edge of the defensive line.
There is plenty of upside with this team but work has to be done during the draft.
