Despite his massive salary cap hit for the 2020 season, the Indianapolis Colts are open to keeping quarterback Jacoby Brissett on the roster even after agreeing to terms on a contract with Philip Rivers.
Brissett carries a $21.3 million cap hit for the 2020 campaign and the Colts can save up to $15.8 million if they trade him. However, they are open to keeping the 27-year-old on the roster, per Stephen Holder of The Athletic.
Given this reality, what happens with Brissett? Team sources have indicated the Colts are not opposed to keeping Brissett on the roster. It almost appears to be their intent at the moment.
It will be interesting to see how the Colts handle their quarterback room. If they keep Brissett, they will be committing $45 million to the position even though only one of them will be on the field at a time.
That said, both players are only under contract for the 2020 season. When looking at the future, it isn’t that bad. But if they want to make moves in free agency now, they are likely going to have to do something about Brissett’s contract.
There are a few teams the Colts could try to shop Brissett to. The New England Patriots are an obvious suitor, though it isn’t clear whether they want to bring him back into the fold after trading him to the Colts in 2017.
This is a big decision to make for the Colts, but it appears they are open to keeping two big quarterback contracts for the 2020 season.
