Colts’ NFL draft preview: Linebacker

Previewing the LBs in the draft.

For the first time in a while, the Indianapolis Colts won’t have to look at adding to the linebacker corps and while they still might do so, it has become a deep position on the roster.

Starters: Darius Leonard, Anthony Walker
Backups: Bobby Okereke, E.J. Speed
Level of need: Low
Cap investment: $8 million (28th in NFL)

Quick review

Led by Leonard and Walker, the Colts have a solid trio when Okereke is brought into the mix. It will be interesting to see if the Colts do add to the linebacker corps as it might be a sign they are willing to let Walker hit free agency in 2021 rather than give him an extension.

Even so, this isn’t a big need for the Colts and the young players they have developing serve as solid depth.

Draft preview

Class overview: The Colts can find a lot of athleticism in the middle of the field from this draft. It’s unlikely they use an early pick on a linebacker but there are some strong options late on Day 2 and early on Day 3 if the Colts were looking to add more athleticism to the room.

Best fit: Justin Strnad, Wake Forest

When combining value and scheme fit, Strnad is probably one of the top targets for the Colts. Because they are unlikely to use a Day 2 pick on a linebacker, the fits we look for are on Day 3. Strnad was a team captain at Wake Forst and has the type of athleticism the Colts like in linebackers. He moves extremely well and would be a strong addition to the middle of the defense.

Other prospects: Akeem Davis-Gaither, App State | Davion Taylor, Colorado | Logan Wilson, Wyoming

Picks most likely used on a LB: Nos. 122, 160
