The Indianapolis Colts have a strong backfield led by one of the game’s elite talents, but that won’t keep them from looking around at the incoming crop.
Tulane running back Tyjae Spears met formally with the Colts ahead of the 2023 NFL draft and while the team will meet with several prospects before the end of April arrives, it wouldn’t be a total shock if a Day 3 selection was made to add some competition to the room.

Spears was a standout at the Senior Bowl and could be considered one of the most explosive backs in the class.
The Tulane product exploded in 2022, taking 229 carries for 1,581 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns. He also added 22 receptions for 256 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
The Colts have Jonathan Taylor under contract through the 2023 season but will likely need to work on an extension this offseason. He underwent an offseason procedure to repair the nagging ankle injury he dealt with throughout the 2022 season.
Behind him, Zack Moss emerged as a solid replacement option late in the season while Deon Jackson has flashed both as a runner and a receiver.
Even with a solid room, there’s no reason to think the Colts will simply sit on what they have without adding some competition. It may not be a position of great need, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the front office emphasize a late Day 3 or priority free agent addition in the backfield.
