The Indianapolis Colts find themselves in the quarterback market yet again in 2021 after going through a season with Philip Rivers as their signal-caller. But he wasn’t the only veteran they looked at last offseason.
While Rivers was the favorite for head coach Frank Reich given their history, the Colts also looked in to another veteran in Tom Brady, who is now in the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“Definitely we looked at Tom (Brady) and thought that would have been a great opportunity but I think Frank (Reich) really knew Philip (Rivers) well. They had worked together and there was such a great familiarity there that it seemed to be a great fit for us,” said owner Jim Irsay on Wednesday. “Really, when I look at where just kind of where we’re at and where we’ll go from here it’s hard to say right now because we don’t know what scenario is going to open up for us.”
That would have been an interesting road to go down. Rivers had a strong season both from a production and an efficiency standpoint and helped lead the Colts to an 11-5 record. But Brady had an even better year working under Bruce Arians.
The history between Colts fans and Brady’s time with the Patriots would have made for an interesting pairing, but if he was able to lead the Colts deep into the playoffs, that may have alleviated some of the hostility from the past.
It doesn’t really matter at this point given the Colts wound up signing Rivers, but it is an interesting nugget that they had interest in Brady during the last offseason.
