Colts grab QB Phil Jurkovec in Touchdown Wire’s 2023 mock draft

Colts grab a QB in Touchdown Wire’s latest 2023 mock draft.

The 2023 NFL draft is still very far away, but our friends over at Touchdown Wire are hard at work preparing for the upcoming offseason and which potential prospects may fit with certain teams.

Even though the Colts are hoping to get multiple years out of Matt Ryan, a quarterback selection in 2023 is still very possible for Indy. Having that player groomed under Ryan is an enticing notion, and Mark Schofield felt that’s the direction the Colts will go in a year from now.

With No. 22 overall pick in the mock draft, the Colts went with Boston College QB Phil Jurkovec. Here’s what Schofield said about the selection:

With the acquisition of Matt Ryan via trade, the Indianapolis Colts are in a position to wait on adding a potential quarterback of the future.

But that does not mean they have to wait.

Before he was sidelined with a wrist injury that required surgery, Phil Jurkovec looked like he would enjoy a draft-season rise of his own last year. But that injury derailed those plans, and when he returned from the injury in November, he struggled in losses to Florida State and Wake Forest. During 2020, however, Jurokvec looked like a potential early-round pick at the position.

The bet here is that he looks much more like the quarterback we saw in 2020, and that the Colts agree and bring him in as their successor to Ryan.

Jurkovec only has one season in college with more than six games played. During that 2020 season, he completed 61% of his passes for 2,558 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of 10 games.

It will be interesting to see how the 2022 season unfolds, but it would be no shock to see the Colts target a quarterback in the next draft.
