Colts get Peyton Manning’s thoughts on QB options

Colts seek counsel from The Sheriff.

When it comes to evaluating the quarterback position, Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich has enough credibility in his own right to make the correct decision on the game’s most important position. But that doesn’t mean he will go at it alone.

Reich isn’t afraid to seek outside help when it comes to a decision like this and that’s why the fourth-year head coach asked Colts legend Peyton Manning his thoughts on some of the potential options available this offseason, per Jim Ayello of The Indianapolis Star.

But another (smaller) part of that process for Reich is seeking outside counsel. Though a quarterback guru with credentials beyond reproach at this point, Reich has always strongly believed in the power of collaboration and surrounding himself with the sharpest football minds.

There is, perhaps, no sharper football mind than the one belonging to Colts legend Peyton Manning, which is why Reich doesn’t hesitate to reach out to his former pupil when he wants an opinion he can trust.

As smart as Reich is when it comes to the quarterback position, the Colts would be remiss to not seek the counsel of one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. Manning, who is all but guaranteed to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this week, is one of the smartest minds to seek counsel from.

“After Philip retired, I started going, ‘OK, here’s all the quarterbacks who could be out there,’” Reich said to IndyStar. “And as we’re talking about who’s going to be our starting quarterback next year, yeah, I called Peyton and asked him his opinion on some of the guys.”

The options aren’t all that great for the Colts. They have some potential stop-gap options available in free agency but none of the realistic players available move the needle. Then if the Colts want to grab a viable quarterback prospect, they are going to have to trade up in the 2021 NFL draft. And that won’t be cheap.

This will be the storyline throughout the offseason for the Colts but it doesn’t hurt to seek counsel from one of the wisest quarterbacks in the game.
