Colts’ Frank Reich: ‘This is the strongest roster we’ve had’

Frank Reich is bullish on the depth of his roster.

Over the last few offseasons, the Indianapolis Colts have made it a point to build the depth on both sides of the ball while placing an emphasis on certain positions.

Entering his third season as the head coach of the Colts, Frank Reich believes this is the deepest unit he’s had since taking over in 2018.

“I think this is the strongest roster we’ve had in training camp. I think the depth is better,” Reich said Monday. “That is really a credit to Chris (Ballard) and his staff and to the coaches who have helped develop these guys in the time that they’ve been here. We still have a relatively young team and I think we’re all excited about that.”

Ballard has been hard at work revamping a roster that looks completely different than what it did when he took over in 2017. Between prioritizing the draft, making sound waiver claims and even making a number of trades, the roster is ready to compete for a playoff spot.

And while a number of veterans will be holding big roles on both sides of the ball, Reich is excited to see what the youth will bring to the table in 2020.

“We want this year to be indicative of the youth, enthusiasm and juice that we bring to the table, but it’s not our first rodeo with this team. We’re in year three,” Reich said. “Our season and our progression as a team should reflect the fact that we’re in year three. We should be hitting our stride and we should go into this season with a lot of confidence and a lot of conviction about what we’re doing and who we’re doing it with.”

The Colts have a chance to take over a wide-open division and are likely the favorites thanks to the depth they’ve accumulated across the roster.
