Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz helped lead the offense to a 45-30 win over the New York Jets on Thursday night, which are the most points the offense has scored since the 2014 season.
While the rushing attack was on point all night long, Wentz also had himself a strong outing against a Jets defense that was all over the place. Wentz finished 22-of-30 passing for 272 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions and a career-high 134.3 passer rating.
Head coach Frank Reich said Wentz and the offense’s performance was as close to perfect as it gets.
“Yeah, pretty close. He really played, like I said last night, it was pretty near flawless performance. A really good outing by the offense in general,” Reich told the media Friday. “It felt like this was one of those outings for the offense this week by a lot of guys, but Carson (Wentz) was certainly at the top of that list.”
The Colts saw Jonathan Taylor continue his ascent into stardom by taking 19 carries for 172 rushing yards and two touchdowns with two receptions for 28 receiving yards. Meanwhile, Nyheim Hines took six carries for 74 rushing yards and a touchdown with four receptions for 34 receiving yards.
All three of Wentz’s touchdowns came in the red zone. He threw one to Michael Pittman Jr. just at the end of the first half and found Jack Doyle on a shovel pass for a score. He also found offensive lineman Danny Pinter for a big-man touchdown.
Wentz certainly looked strong against a poor Jets defense but Reich’s play-calling also deserves credit. Just a few days after he said there would be no change in who is calling plays, he showed why that would be. Reich’s performance was arguably more flawless than Wentz’s.
The Colts get another favorable matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10, but Wentz will be put to the test again with a pair of tough matchups against the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to follow.
