Colts’ E.J. Speed named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Colts LB E.J. Speed named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker E.J. Speed was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week from the 23-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The third-year linebacker was part of a crucial play in the first quarter when special teams captain Zaire Franklin burst through the line to block a punt. Speed was able to follow by scooping and scoring for a touchdown, showing off some impressive vision along the way.

That play, in addition to a special teams tackle, earned Speed the award for the first time in his career.

Speed’s impact comes mostly on special teams. His 10 special teams tackles are second in the NFL only to teammate Ashton Dulin, who leads the league with 12 on the season. He’s also tied for fifth in the NFL with 19 special teams stops since the start of the 2020 season.

Speed is the second Colts player to win this award as punter Rigoberto Sanchez was honored twice in Weeks 4 and 7.
