Colts’ Darius Leonard: ‘We got our ass kicked’

Colts LB Darius Leonard sums up the Week 1 loss accurately.

For the eighth year in a row, the Indianapolis Colts dropped the regular-season opener. This time, it came in an easy 28-16 victory for the Seattle Seahawks.

Colts linebacker Darius Leonard, who recorded just five tackles on the day, perfectly summed up how the game went for the home team.

“We got our ass kicked,” Leonard said after the game.

It’s a pretty good assessment. At no point throughout the game were the Colts really in control. They took a 3-0 lead early, but Russell Wilson and the Seahawks controlled the rest of the game.

The trenches were worked over for the majority of the contest. The offensive line allowed three sacks and 10 quarterback hits. For comparison, the unit hadn’t allowed more than five quarterback hits in a single game during the 2020 season.

The defensive line was dominated for all of the first half. They made some impact plays during the third quarter, but that would be it for the unit. Leonard had a huge forced fumble in the third quarter. However, the Maniac knows the unit needs more.

“Especially in the first half, we didn’t do enough, and then in the second half we made some adjustments,” said Leonard. “We kind of got it going, but we didn’t have enough takeaways. If you want to win football games, you have to take the ball away, and we only had one.”

The Colts can’t afford to start slow. With a tough slate of games on tap to open the season, neither unit looked to play the part of a potential powerhouse.

If the Colts want to keep pace during this gauntlet of games, they are going to have to clean up several areas from Sunday’s loss.
