The Indianapolis Colts were busy when the free agency market officially opened in March, but they didn’t add to one of their biggest needs at the wide receiver position.

Even though they will likely do so during the 2020 NFL draft next week, general manager Chris Ballard said they had their hands in the wide receiver market. However, nothing came to fruition.
“No, there were a couple guys that we kind of dabbled with, but just at the end of the day it just didn’t work out. Sometimes it happens that way,” Ballard said on a conference call Friday.
There were some solid options for the Colts to consider. But after trading for DeForest Buckner, re-signing Anthony Castonzo and bringing in Philip Rivers on a one-year deal, it was becoming clear the Colts weren’t going to be major players for a wide receiver.
There are still some options out there for the team to consider if they wanted to bring in some competition. But they wouldn’t be brought in to be top tier talents to lead the room.
Now, the Colts will be focusing on the draft. It would be surprising if they didn’t use one of their top picks on a wide receiver. Holding the Nos. 34 and 44 picks, it is entirely possible that one or even both picks are used at the wide receiver position.
How the board falls will ultimately determine how the Colts go about using their second-round picks. There are several ways they could go but given the talent available at the wide receiver position in this class, the Colts would be remiss to not take advantage of it.
We will see what happens in less than a week, but it is clear the Colts have an eye on the wide receiver class.
