Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz was among three players placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday, but it is reportedly due to being a close contact rather than a positive test.
While going on the COVID-19 list isn’t a good thing at all, this does mean that Wentz has the chance to return in a quick fashion than if he tests positive. Returning for this week’s practice is out of the question—Wentz has to quarantine for five days regardless—but there is a chance he returns for the start of next week.
Given the league’s protocols for unvaccinated players, which Wentz is confirmed to be now that he has to quarantine, he can provide two negative tests and return following his five days off. In contrast, vaccinated players don’t have to quarantine when considered to be a close contact.

At the earliest, it seems Wentz can return to practice when the team begins preparing for the Week 1 opener against the Seattle Seahawks. The Colts were hoping he would have more time to work with the first-team offense coming off of foot surgery, but he will have to wait at least five days.
In the meantime, second-year quarterback Jacob Eason will be running with the starters. He’s earned the backup role while rookie Sam Ehlinger is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained knee.
