Colts are spending the most money on QBs in 2020

Colts lead the league in QB money in 2020.

Following another season that ended in missing the playoffs, the Indianapolis Colts set out this offseason to upgrade the quarterback position. They did so, but it won’t be cheap.

With Jacoby Brissett still on the roster and unlikely to go anywhere and with Philip Rivers commanding the highest salary-cap hit on the team at $25 million, the Colts are spending the most money against the cap at the quarterback position across the entire league.

According to Spotrac, the Colts have $47,125,000 invested in the quarterback position across three players for the 2020 season. That’s the most in the NFL—the next closest is the Los Angeles Rams ($36.7 million).

Rivers carries a salary-cap hit of $25 million on his one-year deal. That’s the fifth-highest in the league at the position. When the Colts signed Rivers in free agency, Brissett became the league’s most valuable backup as he carries a salary-cap hit of $21.375 million—13th-most in the league.

What makes this situation easier is the fact that it’s only for the 2020 season. Chris Ballard has done a fine job keeping the Colts flexible with the salary cap and even though they lead the league at the position in money invested, it doesn’t have any future implications like it does for other teams.

It is likely the Colts are going to be bringing in a rookie quarterback during the 2020 NFL draft at the end of the month, which will likely spell the end for one of the quarterbacks after the season.

The Colts aren’t a team to overextend themselves when it comes to spending, but the quarterback position will be an expensive one for them in 2020.
